Write a 4 (1200) essay identifying and analyzing historical and cultural themes and ideas that emerge from world literary masterpieces across multiple works. Use at least two primary sources for the analysis (assigned literature from our anthology). In addition, use at least three secondary sources (writing about the author and/or time period) to provide context for your analysis. The anthology may be used as one of the secondary sources.
Explanation and Process
In this essay you will demonstrate your understanding of how historical and cultural themes and ideas that emerge from world literary masterpieces can be traced across multiple works. While essay one asked you to compare different works, this assignment asks you to consider common themes or ideas and do a little more historical/cultural research to supplement the background material in the anthology.
- Theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly. It is what an author is saying about a topic. For example, jealousy is a topic that many of the texts we’ve read have in common; what the author’s express about jealousy in their text would be a theme.
- So, you will select a theme or idea common to world literature and trace or compare/contrast its development across several texts. For instance, you may have noted that “transgression” is a common idea repeated in numerous texts we’ve read. Analyze how the texts develop that idea as a theme, using secondary sources to show how those themes/ideas are influenced by or reflect the culture it was written in. You may use archetypes as ideas that are common to the texts, but again, be sure to pull in supporting evidence from secondary sources to show how the ideas are influenced by or reflect the culture they arise from.
- The literature must be from our anthology. You may use the same texts you selected for essay 1, but if you do this, be sure to substantially revise your claims, do not copy/paste from your first essay, and meaningfully incorporate a discussion of at least three secondary sources.
Requirements
- Write a 4 e (1200 wordas)following assignment guidelines and essay policies on this handout.
- Use MLA paper format and 12 pt. Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier Font; cite sources with MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited entry.
- Minimum of 5 sources.
- Two sources must be literature from The Norton Anthology of World Literature(primary sources)
- Three sources must provide background information about the historical context (secondary sources). One source may be The Norton Anthology of World Literature. You may also use course notes. Find credible, academic sources of information (no Spark Notes, Wikipedia, etc.). This is an opportunity to do some research and learn more about one of the interesting cultures/time periods we’ve touched upon.
- Works Cited page with MLA formatted entries for all the sources used
- Use Standard Written English and a formal tone. Avoid first and second person (I, we, us, me, you), slang, clichés, and colloquial language.

English 231 Essay Policies
Length: Failure to meet the minimum length requirement (and in some cases exceeding it) will result in a lowered grade. The works cited page does not count towards length.
Submission: Essays must be through the Canvas dropbox in a format that can be opened and edited with Microsoft Word.
Late Essays: Due to the quick turn around required by TMCC, I cannot accept late essays for this assignment. If you cannot finish the work on time, we can discuss the option of getting an incomplete as a grade until your able to submit your final essay. It is not an option I recommend and is only allowed in warranted circumstances.
No credit: Essays that do not meet assignment guidelines may be returned without credit.
Plagiarism: Essays should be original work for this class, unless cleared with the instructor. Essays that were written for other classes may be returned without credit. Any sources used need to be cited in the text and listed in the works cited of your essay. Any forms of plagiarism will result in a lowered grade or no credit for the assignment and potentially a lowered course grade, including an “F,” as well. Essays may be submitted to TurnItIn, a plagiarism detection service.
Technology Policy: Technology breaks. Servers go down, transfers time out, files become corrupt. The list goes on and on. These are not considered emergencies. They are part of the normal production process. An issue you may have with technology is no excuse for late work. You need to protect yourself by managing your time and backing up your work.
Extra Credit: 10 points extra credit may be earned by visiting the TLC or using Smarthinking (instructions for both are on the syllabus). Smarthinking often takes up to three days to return feedback, and feedback must be received for extra credit. Submit either your email/proof of visiting the TLC or returned essay from Smarthinking in the assignment dropbox for credit, along with a brief paragraph explaining the revisions you made (you may type this in a separate document or in the comments box of the assignment). You may also copy/paste the proof and your revision notes to the end of your essay.
